The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing operational efficiency and competitiveness at the Port of Durban by issuing a request for proposals (RFP) for the appointment of a terminal operator.
This ambitious project involves the design, development, funding, construction, operation, maintenance, and eventual transfer of a multi-purpose terminal (MPT) dedicated to handling fresh produce and compatible break bulk cargo over a concession period of 25 years.
Situated within the Maydon Wharf precinct of the port, this brownfield development covers approximately 145 hectares and boasts 15 berths capable of accommodating over seven million tonnes of cargo annually.

The precinct itself has garnered a reputation for its mixed-use characteristics, already hosting various cargo terminals that manage dry bulk, break bulk, a limited amount of liquid bulk, as well as containerised units.
Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi, Acting TNPA Port Manager for the Port of Durban, emphasised the importance of this initiative.
“This multi-purpose terminal request for proposals is a pivotal development for the Port of Durban. It will enhance the port’s competitiveness to support the domestic and international supply chain, while aligning with Transnet’s goals to increase cargo volumes and ultimately lead to economic growth and job creation in the region,” he stated.
Prospective bidders interested in competing for this opportunity can access the RFP documents via the National Treasury’s e-tender portal at www.etender.gov.za and on the Transnet website at www.transnet.net.
For those wishing to gain further insights into the RFP process, a non-compulsory briefing session has been scheduled for 7 May 2025, starting at 10:00 am at the N-Shed, located at 2 Quayside Road, Port of Durban.
