Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has revealed plan aimed at strengthening the country's agriculture sector, with a focus on economic growth, food security, and greater support for farmers.
Speaking at the AVI Africa Poultry Conference on Thursday, Steenhuisen highlighted the importance of partnerships, reform, and coordination as key drivers of a more robust agricultural economy.
His remarks came just days after the release of new GDP figures from Statistics South Africa, which showed that the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industry grew by 15.8% in the most recent quarter contributing 0.4 percentage points to the country’s overall GDP growth.
“We can all agree that agriculture plays a vital role in our nation’s economic ambitions and contributes significantly to our trade balance,” Steenhuisen said.
The seven point-plan
Government-Industry Partnerships Steenhuisen stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector. Closer ties with commodity organisations will help drive rural investment and improve food security.
Legal Reform A review of outdated agricultural laws is underway to reduce red tape and encourage innovation. This includes support for technologies such as gene editing and improved product traceability systems.
Export Growth Expanding access to international markets is a top priority. The department plans to fast-track export protocols, strengthen biosecurity measures, and assist farmers in overcoming trade barriers.
Inclusive Farmer Support The plan provides support for all farmers from subsistence to commercial through better access to financing, faster processing of land titles, and crop insurance for small-scale producers.
Stronger Biosecurity In response to recent disease outbreaks, a national vaccination programme will be launched. The government also plans long-term investments in biosecurity infrastructure to reduce future risks.
Cross-Government Action Steenhuisen noted that agriculture cannot thrive in isolation. He is advocating for improved infrastructure, rural safety, and international representation through collaboration with other government departments.
Tackling Food Insecurity The 2024–2029 Food Security Plan will focus on reducing hunger, supporting community food initiatives, cutting food waste, and using data to identify and assist vulnerable communities.
