The Table View policing precinct has introduced its three Junior Commissioners of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Table View.
The introduction took place at the local police station, where senior management of the police station and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, deputy chairperson of the Spiritual Crime Prevention, and Safer Schools coordinators were present.
Station spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, said the Junior Commissioners were accompanied by a parent or school representative.
“With the assistance of the School Forum, Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners from the various schools in the Table View precinct were approached to apply for the positions of Junior Station Commander, Vispol Commander, and Support Commander. Each learner had to write a short essay to indicate why they are interested in the aforementioned positions. The committee read through the essays, and interviews were arranged with seven youths,” Chandler said.
Owethu Munyangane, a Grade 9 learner from Bloubergrant High School, was elected as Junior Station Commander. In her application, Owethu mentioned that she wants to be a positive role model to her peers because she has good leadership skills, is a team player, and a good listener.
Keanan James Auret, a Grade 10 learner from Table View High School, was elected as Junior Vispol Commander. In his application, Keanan explained that he is interested in getting a better understanding of the needs of the community and is deeply committed to creating a safer and unified environment.
Madilynne Swart, a Grade 9 learner from Table View High School, was elected as Junior Support Commander.
In her application, Madilynne mentioned that she would enjoy helping others and making a positive impact in the community. She always tries to be a good example to her peers and likes to solve problems.
“The roles of the appointed Junior Commissioners entail promoting school safety to other learner at school; to support the school safety committee to develop a school safety plan; to support the Police Station's Social Crime Prevention Coordinator with campaigns and initiatives in response to crimes in schools and host monthly meetings for the school safety desk,” Chandler said.
The Junior Commissioners will be serving a two-year term in their post.
Table View Station Commander Colonel Tjikamba Markus Mbangu congratulated the elected Junior Commissioners, who will also participate in the District and Provincial elections.
