In a chilling case that has shocked the local community, Phila Dayile, a 39-year-old man from the Balasi Admin area, received a 55-year sentence for murder and attempted murder in the Qonce Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
This sentence was handed down following a heinous incident where Dayile poisoned three family members using deadly rat poison, leading to tragic consequences.
During the violent episode, Dayile targeted his mother, Zukiswa Dayile, his brother, Xolisa Dayile, and his cousin, Sinazo Dayile.
Sinazo tragically succumbed to the poison, while Zukiswa and Xolisa were fortunate to survive after receiving urgent medical attention at a local hospital.
The episode raised alarm in the Bhisho community, spiralling into a swift police response.
A case of murder and attempted murder was launched, prompting a thorough investigation led by Warrant Officer Khaya Stemele of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Stemele's relentless pursuit of justice and collaboration with the prosecution played a crucial role in gathering evidence and securing a conviction against Dayile.
In delivering the court’s ruling, the magistrate imposed a significant punishment aimed at reflecting the severity of Dayile's crimes.
He received 25 years for the murder of Sinazo Dayile and an additional 30 years (15 years each) for the attempted murders of his mother and brother.
Major General CJ Wright, the Buffalo City District Commissioner, commended Warrant Officer Stemele for his unwavering dedication throughout the investigation.
“This case serves as a reminder of our commitment to ensure justice is served and that our communities are protected from such brutal acts,” Wright stated during a press briefing following the verdict.
The sentencing in this case not only delivers justice for the victims but also underscores the ongoing need for policing strategies to combat domestic violence and family-related crimes in the Eastern Cape.
