Usher hits the high note: honorary doctorate recognises his musical impact

Usher received a doctorate degree from Emory University for his contributions in the music industry.

American R&B singer and songwriter Usher has excitedly shared that he received a doctorate.

Emory University stated on their website that they are honouring the icon for his career in the music industry and his commitment to giving back to the community.

Taking to social media, the “My Boo” hitmaker excitedly shared with his fans that he now has an honorary doctorate from Emory University at its 180th commencement ceremony in Atlanta on Monday May, 12.

“Yesterday, I received an honorary Doctorate from Emory University and had the honour of delivering the commencement address to the class of 2025.

“This moment was a reminder that the journey never stops ... keep dreaming, keep growing, and never stop believing in the power of your voice! Before I could sing, before I could dance and before I was a doctor, I had passion, and that’s what matters no matter what you do!” he captioned his post.

The 46-year-old further added he wants to open doors for young people who may not have the same opportunities as he had.

Fans and friends flocked to his comment section to congratulate him on this achievement.

“Congratulations, Dr Raymond. This is such a worthy honour,” a social media user commented.

Another user added: “Tell them to put some respect on your name, Dr Raymond.

US rapper Lil Boosie also received two doctoral degrees from Kingdom Heritage University, a Christian-based school in Florida.

The “Wipe Me Down” hitmaker was honoured with degrees in music composition and music management, highlighting his long-standing impact on hip-hop.

Many artists in the entertainment industry as a whole have received honorary doctorates from universities or colleges.

Other US celebrities that have received a doctorate degree include iconic singer Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington and many more.

South African actors or singers who have been honoured with doctorate degrees to recognise their contributions in the entertainment industry include the legendary Dr Esther Mahlangu, as well as musical icon Yvonne Chakachaka, amongst others.
