Just when you thought Katy Perry was down for the count, she’s giving us peak pop star resilience; glitter boots, awkward dance moves and all.
The singer, now 40, broke her silence this week after the internet dubbed her “the most hated person online".
A title fueled by a string of cringey moments from "The Lifetime Tour".
From questionable “mom moves” to what some fans described as “a weird fever dream of a show,” social media has been unforgiving. And let’s not forget her recent space tourism stunt, which had people asking whether she was lost in orbit or just out of touch.
Perry joined a group of high-profile women, including Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima and Indian actress Deepika Padukone, on a luxury zero-gravity flight as part of a space tourism promo, and while it was meant to celebrate female empowerment and exploration, the internet wasn’t exactly inspired.
Critics slammed the trip as tone-deaf, with many questioning the point of rich celebrities floating in space while the world burns below.
But Perry isn’t crying into a rhinestoned pillow. At a recent sold-out show in Chicago, the "Not Like The Movies" singer paused mid-set to reflect on the chaos.
In a fan-filmed moment, she looked around at her cheering crowd and declared: “Well, I thought I was the most hated person on the internet. I think that’s false.”
She might’ve been roasted for looking like “your mom doing Jane Fonda in the ‘80s” or giving full Taebo energy (shoutout Billy Blanks), but Perry’s still filling venues.
One fan posted: “Katy Perry casually selling out tours despite everyone trying to make her look evil online.”
Still, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. While the tour kicked off with a bang in Mexico last month, ticket sales in the US have been inconsistent.
Her Texas show reportedly has hundreds of seats going for as little as $50 (around R920), while some resale tickets are shooting past $1,000 (roughly R18,400).
So what’s the truth? Well, Perry might not be trending for the best reasons, but she’s still packing arenas and standing tall through the noise.
