The trial of Sean Combs, known to the world as Diddy, has taken another sensational turn as a series of incendiary claims have emerged during the seventh day of his sex-trafficking and racketeering proceedings at the US District Court in Manhattan.
The 55-year-old music mogul is accused of running a sex trafficking ring and abusing multiple women over two decades, including his ex-girlfriend, Casandra "Cassie" Ventura.
Combs is facing five federal criminal charges, including racketeering, sex trafficking and prostitution.
During the trial, his former assistant, David James, testified.
He detailed his duties, which had included setting up hotel rooms for Combs, laying out Combs’s clothes and toiletries and procuring “personal items” such as baby oil, lubricant, condoms and snacks.
He also described Combs’s medicine bag, which allegedly contained dozens of pill bottles that contained ecstasy and Percocet.
During his testimony, James dropped a bizarre mention of former President Barack Obama, stating that A-listers at Diddy's parties would consume pills shaped like the president's face.
As the trial progressed, Cassie's mother, Regina Ventura, took to the stand to express her anguish over Diddy’s alleged threats to release explicit videos of Cassie.
Regina testified that in December 2011, her daughter emailed her and Combs’s assistant while flying home for Christmas.
She told them that Combs was threatening to release explicit videos of Cassie after learning she was dating American rapper Kid Cudi. Cassie also said in the email that Combs had told her that he would “be having someone hurt” her and Cudi.
Regina said that Combs demanded $20,000 to reclaim what he said he had spent on Cassie.
Concerned for her daughter's safety, she and her husband obtained a home-equity loan to provide her with funds.
Regina allegedly received instructions from Combs’s bookkeeper about how to wire the money and sent it to him. However, the money was returned several days later.
When Cassie returned home for Christmas, her mother said, she then learned of Combs’s alleged violence. She took photographs of the bruises on her daughter’s body to document them.
The primary focus of the day was on the explosive claims from Sharay Hayes, a male escort who operates under the pseudonym "The Punisher".
Hayes provided detailed accounts of extravagant "freak off" sex parties attended by Diddy and his ex-girlfriend, Cassie, at New York's lavish hotels, including the Trump International.
Among the standout moments from Hayes’s testimony was the anecdote of Diddy sporting an Islamic niqab to conceal his identity during their first encounter.
"I could not see his face," Hayes stated, recounting their first meeting in 2012.
"He had what the Muslim women wear, where their face is completely covered."
Hayes mentioned that throughout eight to twelve encounters, Diddy eventually traded the niqab for a more casual baseball cap.
Asked whether Diddy's ex seemed to enjoy herself during the “freak offs”, Hayes said that his understanding had been that “we were creating a scene, a sexy scene, that was enjoyable to her partner”.
He noted that sometimes he observed her “wince” and “sigh” at the frequency of Combs’s instructions.
Cudi is set to testify next.
Testimony from Cassie has already detailed outrageous incidents, including Diddy’s threats against her and Cudi when he discovered their relationship.
During previous hearings, Cassie testified that Diddy had lunged at her with a corkscrew and allegedly threatened to blow up Cudi's car.
The testimony raised the alarming notion that during that time, Cudi's vehicle did indeed explode in his driveway.
The trial is expected to last seven more weeks. If convicted, Combs could spend the rest of his life in prison.
