American singer and songwriter Muni Long (real name Priscilla Renea Hamilton) recently found herself at the centre of controversy after making comments that only black women disliked her personality.
In a video that circulated online, Long said, “It’s only ever black women that say they don’t like my personality. Because I’m being myself, I’m acting just like your raggedy mama and your aunties, but it’s something wrong with my personality? Take a look in the mirror, you don’t like you.”
However, a fan responded with a video of her own, criticising the singer for attacking the very women who have supported her music and career.
The fan, who goes by “NeverStopWithShari” on TikTok, pointed out that black women were instrumental in making her hit song “Hrs & Hrs” popular and that they have consistently shown her love and support.
“Muni Long was on her live today and let it be known that it’s only black women that don’t like her. I think it was only black women that supported you too, nobody liked ‘Hours and Hours’ and all these songs until we liked it,” said Shari in a response video on TikTok.
The fan expressed disappointment in the 36-year-old singer’s comments, feeling that she was bashing the same women who helped her gain the recognition she has today.
The fan’s message took a more aggressive tone, warning Long to “watch what she says” about black women, implying potential consequences if she did not comply.
Long took to her TikTok, making it crystal clear that she is not the one to be messed with.
The Grammy-award winning artist responded directly to the fan in her video, since she was not able to stitch the original video posted by the phone, questioning the tone and potential threat behind the fan’s words.
She asked for clarification on what would happen if she did not “watch” her words, emphasising that she is a grown woman who will not be spoken to in that tone.
She asked: “The first question that I have for you, Ms Shari is … you said ‘you better watch what you say’ or what?"
Additionally, she asserted her maturity and boundaries, stating that she may look young, but will not tolerate disrespect. The exchange highlights a heated debate between Long and a fan, with issues of loyalty, gratitude, and public perception at the forefront.
“I know I look young because I drink water and mind my business, but I’m 36 years old. I’ll be 37 in September, I’ve been grown and taking care of myself for a long time, nobody will talk to me like that,” she added.
The controversy has sparked a wider conversation among fans, with many black women expressing offence at the singer’s comments.
Some have taken to social media to express their frustrations, with a few even saying they will stop streaming her music.
“ I can delete her music ASAP, cuz excuse ME?!?!” said TikTok user @Jaguar Mills. Another user, @Coffee, commented: “Oops, music deleted. Blocked on Spotify.”
“Well, respect goes both ways. Let’s not act like middle-aged black women are not haters that raised haters. If you’re not one of those black women, why are you offended? Obviously, she’s talking to the ones that play in her face,” said TikTok user Virgovibes.
It is worth noting that before she was known by her stage name, she had been in the music industry for years, working behind the scenes as a songwriter for notable artists like Rihanna, Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey before launching her own singing career.
