When a pop star starts climbing the charts and turning heads, it’s only a matter of time before Hollywood comes knocking.
That’s the path Sabrina Carpenter seems to be on after dominating the music scene and becoming a full-blown celebrity, she’s now reportedly being lined up for a role in the next "Mamma Mia!" film.
Yes, the "Espresso" singer is said to be “sought for a role” in the third "Mamma Mia!" movie, which has been in the rumour mill for years.
And now, thanks to a fresh update from long-time franchise producer Judy Craymer, it looks like the film might finally be taking shape.
In a recent interview with "Deadline", Craymer confirmed that "Mamma Mia 3" is “well into development,” adding, “We know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen.”
She even name-dropped Carpenter as someone she’s keeping an eye on, suggesting the pop star could play “a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep.”
This could actually work. Carpenter has the range (vocally and dramatically), a confident screen presence, and a look that fits right into the sparkly, sun-drenched world of "Mamma Mia!".
With acting experience already under her belt and her current pop princess status, she’s more than ready to slip into a pair of platform boots and sing her heart out in Greece.
This isn’t the first mention of Carpenter as a potential cast member. In 2024, Amanda Seyfried told "ABC News" that “if Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen.”
Craymer’s been dropping hints about a third film for some time now. In 2020, she told the "Daily Mail", “I think, one day, there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see.” She also confirmed that Universal Pictures was interested, though nothing concrete followed at the time.
The first "Mamma Mia!" film introduced us to Donna (played by Streep) and her daughter Sophie (Seyfried), who lives on a Greek island and invites three of her mother’s old flames to her wedding in the hope of discovering who her father is. Cue chaos, charm, and a full ABBA soundtrack.
The sequel, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", gave us a split timeline: Sophie in the present, and a young Donna (Lily James) in the past as she met Young Sam, Bill, and Harry.
It also introduced Cher as Ruby, Donna’s long-lost mother, who arrived in full glam and reignited an old romance with Fernando (Andy Garcia).
With Donna gone, Sophie pregnant, and Ruby’s backstory barely scratched, there’s still plenty of room to explore in a third chapter. Craymer confirmed there is already a script in place, but when pressed for details, she simply said, “I’m not going there.”
So, while there’s no release date or official cast just yet, the wheels are clearly in motion. And if Carpenter joins the party? Well, we’ll be first in line to watch her belt ABBA under the Greek sun.
