This Mother’s Day, emerging South African vocalist and songwriter Queen Sinda, born Lusinda Rolisisu, is making waves with her debut single, "Uthando Nguwe", which translates to "Love Is You".
This heartfelt anthem is a touching tribute to the unsung heroines in our lives - the grandmothers, aunts, and matriarchs who have nurtured generations with unwavering love and strength.
Sinda’s stirring homage highlights the profound influence of her grandmother, who left this world on Mother’s Day in 2005 but remains a guiding force in her life.
Produced by the Beyond Busking Project - an initiative of the Cape Town Arts Festival in collaboration with the Ariva Arts Foundation - the song embodies a deeply personal narrative.
"On Mother’s Day 2005, my grandmother left this earthly sphere," shared Sinda.
"But her spirit remains. Her wisdom, love, and gentle hands continue to shape my path in this life’s grand plan. I wrote ‘Uthando Nguwe’ because she lives on through a legacy of love - I know many others were raised by their grandparents too; this song is for them."
In a recent conversation with “Independent Media Lifestyle”, Sinda reflected on her passion for music, which has served as both a healing medium and a strong connection to her identity.
"Singing has brought me healing, comfort, and joy over the years," she said. "I started singing when I was very young, and the encouraging feedback I received made me realise I had something special."
This self-discovery lit the path for her future in music, inspiring her diverse performances across genres including jazz, Afro-soul, gospel, and musical theatre.

Her involvement with the Beyond Busking Project, a groundbreaking incubator for aspiring street musicians, gave her vital tools to bring “Uthando Nguwe" to life.
“I’m so grateful to be part of the Beyond Busking program," she said. "It helped me fulfil my dream of writing my granny a song I’ve always wanted to.”
Yusuf Ganief, chief executive officer of the Cape Town Arts Festival, echoed the sentiment of appreciation for Sinda’s artistry.
“'Uthando Nguwe' is a stunning tribute - not just to one woman, but to all the unseen matriarchs whose love shaped our lives. Lusinda brings truth, vulnerability, and power to her music,” Ganief remarked.
