A highlight of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) has always been its masterclasses — a rare and powerful opportunity for aspiring musicians, students, educators, and music lovers to learn directly from some of the world’s most gifted and influential artists.
Curated and facilitated by Craig Parks and open to all, free of charge, the sessions offer intimate access to global stars who’ll be pulling back the curtain on their creative processes, performance philosophies, and personal musical journeys.

Friday April 25: Tradition, Fusion & Conversation
The series kicks off at 9am with a rich blend of culture and contemporary sound.
- Bombay Lights will explore the integration of traditional instruments in modern jazz, offering a deep dive into the instruments and textures that give jazz its global pulse.
- The soulful sounds of Gotts Street Park come next, unpacking their signature mix of soul, jazz, and fusion. Expect insight into mood, vibe, and building groove-based compositions that speak across genres.
- Plurism, one of the most dynamic ensembles on the line-up, will break down the structure and story of a composition, showing attendees how to craft songs that speak through rhythm and narrative.
- The day wraps at 12:45pm with an intimate Jazz Conversation and Q&A session led by Russian saxophonist Igor Butman. With decades of global experience and a reputation as one of jazz’s most engaging personalities, Butman’s insights will be unmissable.
Saturday April 26: Vocal Power, Horns, and African Roots
Saturday’s programme shifts into powerful territory, with sessions that celebrate voice, writing, and the deeply rooted traditions of African jazz.
- First up, at 10:15am, acclaimed vocalist Kandace Springs will lead a masterclass on music, arrangements, and vocal style. Known for her genre-defying artistry and expressive range, Kandace brings a rare blend of technical brilliance and emotional authenticity.
- British jazz-funk legends Incognito follow with a session on song writing and horn arrangements. Their masterclass promises an education in building infectious melodies and masterfully arranged brass sections that define their iconic sound.

Closing the masterclass series at 12:45 is Mozambican saxophonist Ivan Mazuze, who will speak on “From Tradition to Expression: A Fundamentally African Traditional Music Approach to Jazz.” Mazuze’s perspective will offer a profound look at how African musical heritage can shape and deepen modern jazz expressions.
“These masterclasses aren’t just lessons - they’re experiences. They represent CTIJF’s unwavering commitment to education, access, and excellence. For two days, the walls of CTICC2 will echo with stories, riffs, traditions, and the raw energy of musical mentorship”, said Parks.
