Nomuzi Mabena hosts the new season of Rich Kids Nomuzi Mabena hosts the new season of Rich Kids
MUNYA VOMO
Many people were unhappy to see the first season of Rich Kids on Vuzu because it showed them just how much they still needed to work on their lives. It was one of those shows in which opulence was firmly depicted. To make things worse, the subjects are all well-off teens.
Rich Kids does not show you how Selena Gomez or Justin Bieber live. It is about rich South African youngsters who are living that dream you hope to achieve should you win the Lotto. Whether they made the money or whether it comes from Mommy and Daddy, they still live like sultans. What is of interest is the fact that these young people are not necessarily famous, they are mostly only known in their immediate social circles. So no, you will not see a familiar musician or actor because, honestly, who among them are young and wealthy. None.
This season of the show is hosted by Nomuzi Mabena and she takes us around South Africa to show us the expensive cars, homes and lifestyles that the featured subjects enjoy.
“Working on Rich Kids was a lot of fun – the best part was to see how ‘that other half’ live their lives and spend their money. Most days I left the set feeling really inspired to make loads of money because I got to see first-hand what money can do for you and your family,” said Mabena.
This is all well and good, but if you recall last season, a so-called “rich kid” was broke AF and the directors did not pick it up. It was only when someone noticed while watching the show and then tweeted the truth and suddenly a couple of eggs where on the faces of a few behind-the-scenes people. So what is being done to avoid that happening again?
The Head of Reality for M-Net’s Local Entertainment Channels, Sphumelele Sibeko has the answer: “We’ve gone bigger and louder this year, but in addition to the new levels of opulence, Nomuzi as host is a massive addition to the show. She’ll definitely add an element of dynamism, credibility, with a touch of naughtiness,” he said.
We will cling to the credibility aspect of that statement and demand three months’ bank statements if we have to.
• Rich Kids, Vuzu AMP (DStv channel 103), from October 17, 7pm.
