Twist your reality: inside Cape Town's most mind-bending museum experience
WHAT'S ON
This weekend, Cape Town welcomed its newest attraction - a museum that promises to twist your perception of reality, spark curiosity, and leave you utterly amazed.
More than just a collection of exhibits, this international museum franchise is a playground for the mind, blending science, art, and education into one unforgettable experience.
I had the chance to explore the space and chat with Mark Collie, the museum's owner, who shared the magic behind this growing global phenomenon.
With 53 branches worldwide, including one in Johannesburg, this museum is fast becoming the go-to destination for anyone seeking to expand their mind and challenge their senses.
What makes this museum different?
“This isn’t your typical museum,” Collie explained as we wandered through the interactive exhibits. “Here, you’re encouraged to touch, play, and engage. It’s two parts entertainment, one part education, a perfect formula for learning through fun.”
From holograms to optical illusions, the museum is designed to make you question what you see and how you perceive the world. Imagine looking at an image on the wall, only to step back and watch it morph into something entirely unexpected.
Or standing in a room where your size appears to shrink or grow depending on your position. Every corner of this space is crafted to surprise and delight.
“The science behind these illusions is fascinating,” Collie added. “It’s not just about tricking the eyes, it’s about opening the mind. When you experience something that challenges your perception, it forces you to think differently, to see the world from a fresh perspective.”
Walking through the museum feels like stepping into another dimension. Each room is designed not just to entertain but to educate.
“There’s a lot of science behind these illusions. You gain insights into how you see the world and how you can see it differently,” he said.
A place for everyone
This museum isn’t just for kids, it’s for anyone aged five to 75 who loves to explore, learn, and laugh. Whether you’re a family looking for a fun day out, a couple on a quirky date, or a solo adventurer seeking something new, there’s something here for you.
Collie emphasised the importance of keeping the space accessible and engaging for everyone.
“We want Cape Townians to come in, immerse themselves, and leave with a sense of wonder. It’s not just about the illusions, it’s about fostering curiosity. The more curious you are, the more you question, and the more you grow.”
Plan your visit
The museum is open every day from 9am to 9pm, with slightly shorter hours on Mondays and Wednesdays (9am to 7pm). Tickets are priced at R250 for adults, R200 for children, and discounted rates for seniors.
Families can enjoy a special package for two adults and two children. However, booking online in advance is highly recommended to ensure a smooth experience, as visitor numbers are capped for quality.

At its core, this museum is about more than just illusions, it’s about transformation. It’s about stepping into a space where the impossible feels possible, where you can rediscover a childlike sense of wonder, and where learning happens effortlessly through play.
As Nelson Mandela famously said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”
This museum embodies that spirit, using creativity and innovation to inspire visitors of all ages. It’s a reminder that the world is full of surprises if only you’re willing to look for them.
For me, the highlight of the visit was watching others experience the exhibits for the first time. The laughter, the gasps of surprise, and the pure joy on their faces said it all. A shared experience, a celebration of curiosity, and a testament to the power of seeing the world differently.
