Behind every perfectly poured flat white or expertly layered cappuccino is a barista who treats each cup as a work of art.

And now, South Africa’s talented baristas have a chance to be recognised for their passion and precision — and possibly walk away with a R20,000 prize.

Entries have officially opened for the 2025 Diners Club SA Barista of the Year competition, giving local coffee maestros a platform to showcase their skill, creativity, and love for the bean.

Whether they’re based in a bustling city café or a cosy corner shop, baristas and their coffee shops have until May 31 to enter the running for this prestigious title.

The competition is more than just about winning — it’s about uplifting the unsung heroes of our daily routines. Baristas are often the first friendly face many people see in the morning, and this initiative gives them the chance to be celebrated for the craft, care, and consistency they bring to every brew.

There’s no entry fee, making it accessible for independent coffee shops and rising talents alike. Customers also get to be part of the process by voting for their favourite barista via a QR code provided in-store — one vote per till slip.

It's a fun and interactive way to show appreciation for the person who makes your morning coffee a little brighter.

From June 21 to July 31, coffee lovers across the country can rally behind their favourite baristas, with votes tallied and verified ahead of the grand announcement in August.

The winner will not only receive R20,000 but will also earn the Barista of the Year title and a certificate of excellence to proudly display at their coffee shop.

The competition is in its third year and continues to bring together communities around something as simple — and significant — as a great cup of coffee. Whether you're a seasoned barista or a loyal coffee shop regular, this is a chance to shine a light on those who pour heart and soul into every cup.
