Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted she finds marriage “hard”, and revealed life has not always been rosy with her British rock star husband Chris Martin.
The actress and the lead singer of Coldplay have been married for seven years.
They have two children, Apple, seven, and Moses, five, and split their time between homes in North London and New York.
There have long been claims in US tabloids - always vehemently denied by the couple - of their marriage being under strain.
Now in an interview with the US edition of Elle magazine, 38-year-old Miss Paltrow has spoken of the pressure of marriage.
She said: “Sometimes it’s hard being with someone for a long time. We go through periods that aren’t all rosy. I always say, life is long and you never know what’s going to happen.”
Miss Paltrow, who won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in the 1999 film Shakespeare In Love, insists the couple have no intention of separating. But she said that if they ever did decide to end their marriage it would be an amicable split because of the respect they have for each other.
She said: “If, God forbid, we were ever not to be together, I respect him so much as the father of my children. I made such a good choice. He’s such a good dad.
“You can never be relaxed or smug and think, ‘I’ve got this thing’. That’s also part of it: keeping yourself on your toes. I’m not going to take this for granted.”
The couple married in California in December 2003 and rarely talk about their relationship.
