The fashion on display on the black carpet of the 2025 Metro FM Music Awards made for an interesting event.
The theme for the Metro FM Music Awards was black and crowning greatness and the interpretations included lots of headpieces and dresses with extra add-ons.
There’s often debate around whether Mzansi personalities bring their A-game when it comes to dressing for major events, with many holding up Nigerian fashion, particularly the dramatic, 3D styles, as the gold standard.
But that narrative might be unfair. Not every look needs to be over the top to make a statement. Sometimes, simplicity speaks louder.
South African designers are bursting with creativity, and it’s time local stars gave them the space to showcase their vision, rather than asking for replicas of Veekee James-inspired designs.
Vocalist Babalwa M popped in the colour pink on the red carpet in a Designs by Rati two-piece couture ensemble. The top part of her outfit featured roses, a symbol of giving herself her flowers.
Designs by Rati also dressed presenter Rorisang Thandekiso in a purple gown that elegantly highlighted her silhouette. Known for her love of baggy clothes, the figure-hugging dress put her out of her comfort zone but she nailed the look.

Holworthy walked the black carpet with her designer giving him also a spotlight to shine. The designer Quinx Ngomane shared that the look was crafted to celebrate Lamiez as a powerhouse, blending elements of softness with unapologetic boldness.
Host Siyabonga Ngwekazi, popularly known as Scoop Makhathini, stepped onto the black carpet in his traditional isiXhosa garment.
His fellow co-host Luthando ‘Loot Love’ Shosha walked the carpet in a white bridal-inspired look by Scalo and an over-the-top head accessory by JoZEEst Accessories by ZEE. She was also dripping in Swarovski Octagon Lucent Hoop Earrings, Matrix Y Necklace, and Matrix Tennis Bracelet.
Award-winning singer and performer Langa Mavuso sizzled in a red leather outfit by Neo Serati look and was dripping in Swarovski’s Pear Cut Matrix Bracelet, Pear Cut Matrix Brooch, and the Matrix Tennis Chrono Watch.
Gospel legend Dr. Rebecca Malope wore her original design to walk the red carpet. Malope has been spotted at several events wearing her creations. She expressed how proud she was to be discovering the different talents God has blessed her with.
The black carpet was once again placed in one of the tunnels at Mbombela Stadium creating an entryway that served as the black carpet experience. Minor tweaks were made to accommodate the SABC 1 live broadcast, which in a way made the media line shorter.
One keeps praying that one day, carpets will find the glue to keep the organisation intact, but that day is yet to arrive. Organisers, however, tried their level best to make sure the black carpet was flowing with the who’s who of Mzansi for interviews and pictures.
One also has to give credit to the managers and publicists who made sure to secure interviews for their artists, introducing them to journalists on the media line.
