No jail time for Durban cop killer

Durban - A woman, who drove several metres with a man she had just knocked, on her car bonnet, will not spend time in jail.
This emerged on Wednesday in the Durban Magistrate's Court where Nolwazi Nzimande appeared on charges of culpable homicide, defeating the ends of justice and contravening sections of the Road Traffic Act for failing to stop, failing to report the accident and for failing to assist the injured.
Magistrate Simphiwe Hlophe handed Nzimande a five year suspended sentence and placed her under house arrest. Nzimande was fined a total of R8 000 or 18 months in prison.
Nzimande, 30, was convicted of culpable homicide 26-year-old Phumlani Mbatha, six years ago. Mbatha, a Metro Police officer, was off-duty at the time of the crash.
Nzimande hit Mbatha who was crossing Berea Road but did not stop. Instead, she continued driving off with an injured Mbatha on her bonnet before he fell off on Silverton Road, near Musgrave Centre.
He was picked up by paramedics but died at Addington hospital the next day. Nzimande's co-accused John Solomon is yet to be sentenced.
