The son of Western Cape High Court Judge President John Hlophe has entered into a plea bargain with the State in terms of which he received a wholly suspended sentence and a R10 000 fine for issuing fake cheques and giving false information to secure a loan.

In his plea and sentence agreement, entered into at the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court on Monday, 29-year-old Thuthuka Hlophe pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud.

Hlophe admitted that he had issued two fake cheques to a Table View man in exchange for a BMW 330i between September 2007 and October 2007.

In December the following year, he used the name of his cousin, Siphesihle Linda Ntombela, to apply for a loan at Capitec bank in Mowbray.

He inserted his photograph into his cousin’s identity document. In order to secure the loan, he told a consultant that he earned more than R30 000 a month.

In October that year, Hlophe issued another fake cheque, to the value of R32 522, to another man. However, the bank dishonoured the cheque on presentation.

The State withdrew 10 other charges, which included fraud, theft and uttering of forged documents.

Hlophe was also ordered to repay R8 000 to one of the complainants.
