A 73-year-old man, who has pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting three teenagers and being in possession of 89 pornographic images of the girls, has abandoned a bid to be released on bail pending his sentencing, the Parow Regional Court has heard.

Johannes Adolph Kleinhans of Parow North was arrested on November 12, 2010, in connection with allegations that he had sexually assaulted the three girls and forced them to pose seductively so that he could photograph them.

The girls were aged between 13 and 15 at the time and the offences were committed between 2009 and 2010.

He was initially out on R50 000 bail, but was back in custody on May 8 this year after he pleaded guilty to 95 charges including sexual assault, indecent assault, sexual grooming, compelled self-sexual assault and using children to benefit from child pornography.

The indecent and sexual assault charges relate to allegations that Kleinhans inappropriately touched the girls.

He had also forced one of the girls to use sex toys on herself.

The 89 pornographic images of the girls showed their naked bodies, exposed genitals and other body parts.

Kleinhans, who lived in a rented house in Bellville at the time, admitted that he had invited one of the girls to use his gym equipment there.

She had later brought a friend, who was then also photographed naked and sexually assaulted over a period of two years.

A third girl had also been photographed at Kleinhans’s Parow home when she visited him alone.

Kleinhans admitted that he had paid the girls for the photographs and that he had supported their families and paid for their school fees.

Prosecutor Herculine Swart told the court on Tuesday that Kleinhans had abandoned his bail application and added that the case could be postponed for sentencing procedures.

Swart added that the State and defence intended to call witnesses to testify in aggravation and mitigation of sentence.

Kleinhans’s lawyer, Johannes Grobelaar, confirmed that his client would no longer be applying for bail.

Kleinhans will remain in jail until his next court appearance on July 30.
