A bus driver was shot, and passengers were robbed during a violent incident in Verulam on Monday morning.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram, the incident took place in Buffelsdraai on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.

RUSA responded to the scene after reports of an armed robbery on a bus.

Balram said it is alleged that three suspects, armed with 9mm pistols, boarded the moving bus and began robbing commuters at gunpoint.

The suspects then opened fire inside the bus, shooting the driver in the chest and abdomen. He was transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Balram confirmed that two newborn babies were among the passengers on board at the time of the robbery.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) have been approached for comment and will be added once received.
