A bus driver, who was shot during an armed robbery in Buffelsdraai earlier on Monday, died in hospital, paramedics said.

The incident occurred while the MAN Diesel bus was travelling along Buffelsdraai Road.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram, said four suspects allegedly posed as passengers before taking out firearms, then they opened fire while the bus was in motion.

The driver was struck in the arm and abdomen, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and come to a stop in dense roadside vegetation.

“The suspects stole cash and robbed approximately 20 passengers of their valuables before they fled on foot,” said Balram.

“The critically injured driver was transported to a medical facility by a passerby who stopped to assist. He died from his injuries shortly after arrival.”

An extensive search was conducted by RUSA officers in the area, but no arrests have been made at this stage.

The suspects remain at large.

KwaZulu-Natal police were not immediately available to comment.
