Police in Cape Town said they are investigating the drowning of an elderly couple at the Table Bay Harbour on Wednesday.
The couple, believed to be in their 70s, are Polish nationals.
The Western Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Andrè Traut, said police were called to the Cape Royal Yacht Club in the morning.
“At approximately 8.15 am, police divers discovered the bodies of a man and a woman in the water. An inquest docket has been opened by Table Bay Harbour police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Traut said.
While it is the early stages of the investigation, police do not suspect any foul play.
“A post-mortem examination will be conducted to confirm the cause of death, although drowning is considered the most likely cause,” Traut said.
Police are also withholding the identities of the suspected drowning victims.
“The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending formal identification and notification of next of kin,” Traut said.
Police have urged anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
