A man who went missing at sea last week at the Southbroom Main Beach in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has been found.
The body of the 22-year-old tidal pool maintenance man went missing in the surf on Thursday, May 15, and was located and recovered on Monday by police divers and crew members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said the search has been ongoing since the man went missing and at just after 1.30pm on Monday, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of a body seen floating in the surf zone offshore of Southbroom Main Beach.
“A search by Police divers, for the missing Durban man, assisted by Police K9 Search and Rescue, NSRI Shelly Beach and NSRI Port Edward, has been ongoing since Thursday last week.”
“The SA Police Services were alerted and Police Search and Rescue, Water Policing and Diving Services) (WPDS) and a Shelly Beach Police Station patrol vehicle responded. The NSRI Shelly Beach rescue craft, the Spirit of Dawn, accompanied by police divers, was launched. NSRI Port Edward duty crew were alerted and the NSRI Port Edward crew responded to assist with on-scene visuals from the shore side,” Lambinon said.
On arrival at the scene, Lambinon said the body of the man was located and recovered from the water by police divers, assisted by NSRI, and recovered onboard the NSRI rescue craft.
“The family of the 22-year-old man (who went missing on Thursday in the surf zone) attended the NSRI rescue base in the care of NSRI, police, and forensics authorities. Formal identification of the man is being arranged with the family by formal protocols. An inquest docket has been opened by police,” Lambinon added.
