Scrap provincial governments, urges Azapo
By Khathu Mamaila
The Azanian People's Organisation has renewed its call for the abolition of provincial government, saying the establishment of strong municipalities, especially the metro councils, renders the provinces redundant.
In a statement released after the party's central committee meeting in Kimberley at the weekend, Azapo said the provincial governments were a heavy burden to the taxpayer and their continued existence could not be justified.
Azapo, which advocates a unitary state, called for the phasing out of provincial governments, saying this could unlock resources used to pay politicians and bureaucrats.
The party maintains the present system is flawed in that elected leaders are not directly accountable to those who elected them, but rather to their party.
