The IFP suspects that the probe into KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is 'politically motivated'.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in KwaZulu-Natal has voiced strong concerns regarding the ongoing investigation into Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the province's police commissioner.
The party argued that the inquiry is politically motivated and threatens the integrity of law enforcement in the region.
This after the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) launched an inquiry into Mkhwanazi for allegedly interfering with the arrest of a senior Correctional Services official.
Blessed Gwala, IFP KZN provincial spokesperson for Community Safety and Liaison, released a statement expressing the party's alarm regarding the implications of the investigation.
“While we refrain from speculating on the exact reasons for this investigation, the timing and broader implications cannot be ignored,” Gwala stated.
“It reeks of a concerted attempt to malign the character of Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi, potentially sabotaging his prospects during promotion processes.”
He added that Mkhwanazi has been recognised for his unwavering dedication to combating crime and upholding justice.
“His no-nonsense approach to policing has set a high standard,” Gwala noted, praising Mkhwanazi’s commitment to ensuring that criminals face the full force of the law.
“His principled nature and integrity are second to none, always placing the safety of the people of KZN above any personal or political considerations.”
The IFP suggested that the investigation may respond to Mkhwanazi’s effective leadership, which some political figures may see as threatening.
“We are convinced that his 'can-do' attitude and firm stance on law enforcement have ruffled the feathers of certain individuals threatened by his dogged pursuit of justice,” Gwala explained.
“His refusal to be swayed by political pressures has put him at odds with those who would rather see the system remain compromised.”
Under Mkhwanazi’s leadership, the KZN police force has reportedly made significant strides in reducing crime rates and restoring public confidence.
“His tireless efforts have bolstered public confidence in the police,” Gwala remarked, emphasising the importance of maintaining strong leadership in the fight against criminal syndicates.
The IFP warned that any attempt to remove Mkhwanazi from his position could have dire consequences for public safety.
“Should this investigation be used as a pretext to remove him from his post, it will embolden criminals and allow them to continue their criminal activities unchecked,” Gwala cautioned.
“This would be a travesty, sending a deeply troubling message that those who dedicate themselves to safeguarding our communities are instead persecuted for doing their jobs.”
“We urge that this investigation be conducted with due respect for the extraordinary work he has done in making KZN a safer place for all,” Gwala stated.
Unions, including the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru), firmly called for state resources not to be misused to target Mkhwanazi.
Thulani Ngwenya, president of Popcru, expressed concern that such controversies and allegations could create uncertainty among officers grappling with difficult working conditions.
"The timing is such that it is difficult for me to believe there isn’t another motive at play," he stated, raising concerns about the internal politics of the police force, particularly with the impending selection of a new national police commissioner.
Mkhwanazi has denied all allegations against him, claiming he was being targeted by criminals who had links to influential people in the country.
