International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa will soon appoint a new US ambassador, emphasising that Mcebisi Jonas has been designated as a special envoy to establish a foundation for peace.
"When the president is ready, he will appoint an ambassador. But we want first the special envoy to lay the ground that will help us navigate these uncharted waters," said Lamola.
Jonas was appointed last month to the position. He will lead negotiations, foster strategic partnerships and engage with US government officials and private-sector leaders to promote our nation’s interests.
His appointment came after the US expelled former ambassador Ebrahim Rasool in March. He was considered a “persona non grata”.
Rasool was declared persona non grata by the US government after making remarks during a webinar in which he associated President Donald Trump with white supremacy.
However, he maintained that his remarks were not directed at Trump.
The appointment of a special envoy does not eliminate the necessity of appointing an ambassador. The designation of an ambassador remained essential.
Lamola emphasised that Jonas must continue laying the groundwork in preparation for the confirmation of Rasool’s successor.
Meanwhile, Jonas was met with criticism by the likes of AfriForum and Solidarity Movement, saying he was not good for the position.
On X, AfriForum CEO, Kallie Kriel, posted: "Here Mr Mcebisi Jonas, South Africa's new Special Envoy to the United States of America, insults President @realDonaldTrump. Given these remarks, do you think Jonas will be able to mend the shaky relationship between South Africa and the Trump administration?”
