Maria Mabuza, 28, who is serving a 10-month sentence for shoplifting, has been granted a temporary release to attend her son's funeral on Saturday.
Mabuza was informed earlier this week of eight-year-old Dida's death by family members during a visit to Pretoria Central Prison.
Lydia Letibe, assistant head of the women's prison, said Mabuza's temporary release application had been approved.
"Her application has been approved and we are in the process of finalising the necessary arrangements," said Letibe.
Mabuza will be escorted by correctional officials to the funeral and returned to prison afterwards.
Dida's body was found last Saturday between Mamelodi and Nellmapius after he went missing the previous Thursday.
He was last seen alive by his Grade 3 teacher and friends at Boikgantsho Primary School.
A relative found the boy in the veld hanging from a tree by his school tie.
The funeral service will be held at his family's home in Mamelodi East and mourners will then proceed to Mamelodi East Cemetery where Dida is to be buried.
Police Captain Piletji Sebola, said no arrests had been made in connection with the murder.
"Police are still investigating," he said.
