Four doctors struck from the register

The Health Professions Council of South Africa has struck four doctors from the register of practitioners as a result of professional misconduct.

HPCSA spokesperson Tendai Dhliwayo said the doctors were found guilty by the HPCSA on "charges ranging from employing unregistered personnel to indecent assault, the sexual assault of patients and incompetence, respectively".

The four, doctors Preshotman Maistry, Mahomed Khan, Lloyd Daniels and Waynne Lieberthal, were found guilty of the respective charges against them by a HPCSA board of professional conduct inquiry.

The current financial year has also seen the HPCSA collect about R1,5-million in fines from medical practitioners, said HPCSA registrar and chief executive Boyce Mkhize.

"This money is used to cover costs of prosecuting practitioners. It also helps the HPCSA carry out its mandate of protecting the public."

Mkhize said increased public awareness had led to "a significant rise in complaints by members of the public on malpractice".
