A truck driver who allegedly stole a truck and then rammed into police who tried to stop him has been arrested.
The incident was caught on camera and has since gone viral on social media.
In the video, the truck driver is seen ramming into a police vehicle and running over a pedestrian.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police responded to a complaint of a truck that was being chased from Mobeni Heights in the Chatsworth area.
"The said truck was reportedly stolen in Chatsworth. During the chase, the truck driver in question committed several reckless and negligent acts in the Chatsworth, Berea, and King Dinizulu areas.
"When the said truck was at Underwood Road in Pinetown, police instructed the driver to stop the truck, and the driver intentionally rammed the police vehicle, and the state vehicle was damaged."
Police said the suspect, who is a foreign national, was injured on the arm and was also grazed by a bullet.
"Police survived the crash unscathed. The suspect was arrested and is in the hospital under police guard."
He said Chatsworth police are investigating cases of attempted murder, using a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, together with reckless and negligent driving.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they responded to numerous calls of a shooting incident and an accident involving an SAPS vehicle on Monday at 3pm.
"Paramedics arrived on the scene to find SAPS had closed off the entire roadway. Paramedics found multiple vehicles damaged, some with bullet holes and others after the crash."
Jamieson said a truck that was allegedly driven by a suspect had collided head-on into a SAPS vehicle whilst being chased by other SAPS members.
"The truck was found badly damaged as a result of the crash, as well as bullet holes. The driver had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and was stabilized on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being transported to the hospital under police guard."
He said a vehicle with a family on their way home was also involved in the crash, and five occupants had sustained minor to moderate injuries and were treated on scene by ALS Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care that they required.
