Pretoria - Afrikaans singer-songwriter Kurt Darren is still in severe pain after a serious car accident last week and will remain in hospital for at least another week.
His brother, Darren van Heerden, said on Sunday Kurt had experienced the most pain on Saturday, but denied reports that he had had a setback.
Darren, 43, broke 11 ribs and sustained a hairline fracture after the car he was travelling in veered off the Kameelfontein Road, north of Pretoria, ending up in a ditch.
Darren and friends Marnus Bisschoff and Nadia van Rensburg were on their way home after watching rugby at Loftus Versfeld Stadium nine days ago.
He was airlifted to the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Joburg, where he remains in the high-care unit.
“He had a terrible headache on Saturday and was in severe pain. He was really not feeling well at all,” said Van Heerden. “But he was doing much better today.”
Shortly after the accident, Darren experienced double vision which was attributed to swelling on the brain caused by the hairline fracture.
Van Heerden said doctors expected the swelling to reduce in time and his vision to return to normal.
Darren’s spirits had been lifted on Wednesday when his wife Dunay returned from a cruise in Greece.
“The support and wellwishers have been overwhelming. Kurt’s hospital room is full of cards, notes, flowers, sweets and chocolates,” Van Heerden said. When able to, Darren would pass on some of these treats to patients in the children’s ward.
