Pretoria - A brain scan has confirmed that Afrikaans singer and songwriter Kurt Darren did not receive permanent eye damage in a serious weekend car accident.

Speaking from Darren’s hospital bedside, his brother, Darren van Heerden, said he was extremely relieved when he heard the news.

“The doctors have told us that Kurt’s (Darren) vision will return to normal and all that is needed is a little time,” Van Heerden said.

Darren, 43, known for hits like Meisie Meisie and Loslappie, started experiencing double vision on Monday after he was airlifted to the Netcare Milpark Hospital on Sunday morning following the accident.

He broke eight ribs when the car in which he was travelling rolled and landed in a ditch on Kameelfontein Road north of Pretoria. He was travelling with his friend Marnus Bisschoff and assistant Nadia van Rensburg after watching rugby at a nearby restaurant.

Van Heerden said Darren’s double vision could also be a side effect of the morphine he was receiving. Darren would remain in intensive care for a few days.

“He is still in extreme pain and cannot move an inch without feeling the broken bones rub against each other. I’m here with him now and the best thing for him to do is to get plenty of sleep,” he said.

Van Heerden said Darren’s wife, Dunay, was on her way back to South Africa and should be by Darren’s side this morning. She was on a cruise in Greece with her mother and aunt when she heard the news.

According to Van Heerden, Bisschoff received several cuts and bruises, while Van Rensburg dislocated her hip.
