Durban - A cellphone app has helped security officers arrest robbers who ransacked a local sushi shop.
According to Kyle van Reenen, of Marshall Security, while the company officers were on patrol last week, they were flagged down by a man who said he had been robbed by four armed men, who then fled in a white Audi A7 sedan.
Van Reenen said the man was the manager of the Bamboo Sushi Lounge in uMhlanga Rocks Drive, who told about being confronted by the gang when he was locking up.
The business was then robbed of an undisclosed amount of money, a flat screen TV, as well as computers and other electronic equipment. The gang also robbed the manager of his wallet and iPhone before fleeing in their getaway vehicle, Van Reenen said.
The security company decided to track the whereabouts of the gang through an app on the phone that locates the handset’s whereabouts, and the signal directed them to the Inanda area of Durban.
SAPS Greenwood Park, Durban Central K9 unit and the Durban Central Flying Squad, working with Marshall Security, went to the area.
“The motor vehicle involved, a white Audi A7, was found parked outside a home in the township. A raid of the house revealed two of the suspects in possession of the stolen iPhone. They were positively identified by the victim as being among those who had robbed him earlier.”
Housebreaking tools were also found at the house, Van Reenen said. It also transpired that the Audi getaway car had been hijacked in the Briardene area earlier this year.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane, confirmed the robbery.
