Days after a matric exam marker died in Gauteng, another marker died over the weekend in the Northern Cape.
Blessing Mthetwa, passed away in the early hours of December 8, 2024 following an epileptic attack.
Northern Cape education spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said Mthetwa served as an educator at the Hotazel Combined School.
He said she was on duty at one of their marking centres in Kimberley when the tragedy occurred.
"The Department immediately notified the school and her family and offered the necessary support.
"We have also activated our psycho-social support services to the school and her colleagues for counseling sessions."
Northern Cape Education MEC Abraham Vosloo conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family as well as her colleagues in the education sector.
"According to our information, Ms Blessing Mthetwa has served her school and the community at large with distinction and her contribution to the education system will be sorely missed."
Last week a 50-year-old exam marker died after she fell and hit her head on a pole.
The incident took place at the Alberton Marking Centre on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
According to reports, the marker allegedly tripped and hit her head against a pole while leaving the centre on Tuesday evening.
The Gauteng education department said she was immediately rushed to the hospital but, sadly, succumbed to her injuries later that night while receiving medical attention.
Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane said: “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the deceased marker's family, friends, and colleagues. Her commitment to the education sector was invaluable, and her untimely passing is a profound loss to all of us."
