Johannesburg - After a two year hiatus, the Nedbank International Polo, returned to the Inanda Polo Club for a day of equestrian and social flair.
On Saturday, the prestigious event saw the South African national polo team taking on England after over 30 years.
The event attracted some of the most popular faces on South African television and other media and fashion personalities.
Through Nedbank’s #NewNobility initiative, and in line with the event’s dress theme, ’Reflections of Art’, attendees were encouraged to use their influence and shine a spotlight on some of SA’s best up-and-coming artists who exhibited their work at the event.
#NewNobility, launched in 2019, is aimed at turning the concept of ‘nobility’ into a virtue rather than a title; it is about those who have reached the top to use their influence to help those who are just starting out.
Nedbank, through its Arts Affinity programme, partnered with the Arts & Culture Trust to provide three deserving artists with the chance to exhibit, sell and showcase their impressive work in front of the #NewNobility.
Nedbank Group Executive: Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Khensani Nobanda, explained: “At Nedbank, we believe that money well managed can make a real difference in people’s lives and that is why we continue to provide the #NewNobility platform.
“ We are challenging South Africans to take a fresh perspective on what it means to be part of the upper echelons of society by using their social influence to give emerging artists a leg up.”
Arts Affinity beneficiaries, Natho Nzima, Rick Baloyi and Anja Erasmus were commissioned to create unique pieces of art inspired by #NewNobility, under the guidance of top Litema visual artist, Baba Tjeko. Their works were displayed at the Nedbank marquee. Guests had the opportunity to either win the original art piece or purchase one of 10 prints with all proceeds going back to the artists.
“Creating art gives me direction, I am more of a follower to this intuitive process,” said Baba Tjeko.
Art comes from a different space for Tjeko, and he believes in obeying whatever it tells him to do.
“#NewNobility resonates so much with me because it is similar to my work. In my work and personal life I believe in the principles of ubuntu. #NewNobility is a concept of the affluent and privileged using that influence to impact others who have the potential.”
Media personalities includingstars of the hit Showmax series ‘The Wife’ , Mbalenhle Mavimbela, Kwenzo Ngcobo and Mondli Makhoba were among those who attended.
While some celebrities followed the theme others chose classic polo outfits and gowns to wear to the horse affair.
After South Africa won the polo match, guests partied the night away to the sounds of afro soul artist Simmy and others.
