I’m turning back the hands of time all the way to 673-735 AD for this one. According to the writings of Venerable Bede, an Anglo-Saxon deity named Ēostre was accompanied by a hare or rabbit because she represented the rejuvenation and fertility of springtime. Venerable is what you’d call someone who’s gained respect and admiration through age, wisdom and character by the way so that must mean they knew what they were talking about.
In German mythology it’s also said that a bird was injured and a goddess came along and took pity on the poor bird turning it into a rabbit so it could run away escaping impending danger. What a legend.
Easter became a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus then the pagan symbolism of rabbits and eggs was incorporated symbolising the rebirth and new life that Ẽostre represented earlier on in the story. Ēostre known as Ostara in Germanic traditions brought about the Easter bunny or Osterhase as they call it and that was how that cute little hip hopper that delivers those yummy eggs was born.
Almost like Santa, it is believed that the bunny, in German folklore, would lay coloured eggs (still being a bird in soul coz we all know bunnies don’t lay eggs) for well behaved children. Immigrants popped over to the United States and took this tradition with them way back when in the 18th century and to this day we love ourselves a good Easter egg hunt spreading joy, excitement and a couple of extra kilos over this special holiday! I’m telling you all of this ahead of time so you can plan ahead for those public holidays and special family days together this Easter.
