Durban hosted the start of the Comrades Marathon 2017, with the race beginning outside the City Hall at 5.30am.
This annual event attracted the attendance of road-running dignitaries, the top runners, stakeholders and sporting personalities, and is set to finish at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.
The leaders have just made their way past Polly Shortts at the time of writing, with Pietermaritzburg's own Bongmusa Mthembu in the lead, and favourites such as defending champion David Gatebe and Gift Kelehe in the chasing pack.
In the women's race, American Camille Herron has opened up a substantial advantage on the rest of the field,
South African favourite and defending champion Charné Bosman is pushing hard to get into contention, though.
But for many runners, the main achievement is just to finish the Ultimate Human Race within the official cut-off time of 12 hours when they get to Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.
