Samantha Graham-Maré, the two-time breast cancer survivor and South Africa's Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, has been appointed as the newest ambassador for PinkDrive NPC to empower cancer fighters.

It is explained that through Graham-Maré's influential role as ambassador, the organisation aims to broaden its outreach and impact, ensuring that more individuals are educated, screened, and supported in their battles against cancer.

Her journey has been marked by resilience and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. having transitioned from a successful business career into public service in 2009,

Initially serving as a councillor in the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality from 2011 to 2019, she was elected to Parliament in 2019, holding positions including Shadow Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure and then Shadow Minister of Electricity.

Her most recent role, as deputy minister of electricity and energy, was appointed to her on July 3, 2024.

Graham-Maré's personal story as a two-time cancer survivor is a powerful testament to her character. Diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in 2010 at the age of 41, despite having no risk factors or family history, she faced the disease with tenacity.

Despite undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and a lumpectomy, and celebrating a hard-won victory, the battle resurfaced in 2018, as she faced stage 3 breast cancer during the 2019 National Elections campaigning.

She underwent a bilateral mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy and 21 doses of radiation, exemplifying her determination that cancer would not define her life.

“Cancer is a thief, but it cannot take your dreams,” reflects Graham-Maré on her journey.

Now, as an ambassador for PinkDrive, she aims to share her story to empower others facing similar challenges, emphasising the need for community support and resilience.

"Both of my battles with cancer have shown me the importance of perseverance, hope, and the power of community," she continued.

“It’s an honour to serve as PinkDrive’s ambassador and to use my story to help others find the strength to fight.”

The alignment between Graham-Maré's personal experiences and PinkDrive's objectives of providing mobile clinics, cancer screenings, and health education is profound. Her commitment to raising awareness about early detection resonates deeply, as she knows firsthand the critical role it plays in successful treatment.

“I am proud to partner with PinkDrive,” she said.

“My own experiences have shown me the importance of never giving up. The support from my family, my colleagues, and my community has been invaluable. I want to make sure others know that they are not alone in their fight.”
