This rare coin, struck in the wilderness of the Mpumalanga region by Boers fleeing British forces during the Second Anglo-Boer War, is revered as the ‘holy grail’ of South African coins, and this auction presents a rare opportunity for numismatic aficionados.

Landon Coleske, a representative from Bassani’s, said, “the 1902 Gold Veldpond that we have up for bidding is an uncirculated (MS61) and valued at R450,000.” The coin, created on a makeshift press and hidden away from British sight, carries a rich history that exemplifies South Africa’s tumultuous past. With its potent narrative and eye-catching market value, this is a gold coin like no other for those striving to expand their collection.

The Signature Auction 13 is set to commence at 7 pm, and alongside the Veldpond, collectors will have the chance to bid on the illustrious 1892 1oz Krugerrand, whose scarcity boasts only 2,067 ever minted. This remarkable piece typically garners bids exceeding R90,000, notably eclipsing the current gold spot price of around R62,000. Bidders will also have the chance to explore the 1897 Gold Reef City Prestige Set, which comprises a 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10oz coin, each distinctively marked with a "GRC" to signify their origin.

A standout of the evening is the 1898 Sammy Marks Tickey, graded AU 53. While uncirculated versions often fetch well over R500,000, this exceptional example is expected to reach around R250,000. Struck under special permission for the industrialist Sammy Marks using dies meant for the 1898 silver tickey, this piece is one of merely 215 minted, adding to its desirability among collectors.

“The Sammy Marks Tickey is one of South Africa’s numismatic ‘Big Five’,” Coleske mentioned, emphasizing its tiny mintage and significant Anglo-Boer War provenance.

For context, the South African numismatic ‘Big Five’ includes some of the nation’s rarest and most valuable coins, with the 1902 Veldpond standing alongside the 1898 ZAR Pond 99 Stamped, the 1874 Burgerspond Fine Beard, and the 1874 Burgerspond Coarse Beard.
