Chery’s Australian division has pulled the covers off a new-generation compact SUV that will be badged as the Tiggo 4 Pro in that market.

The new model is set to launch in South Africa before the end of 2024 if all goes according to plan, a Chery Auto SA spokesperson has confirmed to IOL, however it will have a different name for our market.

The newcomer will be referred to as the Chery Tiggo Cross, as the current Tiggo 4 will continue to be sold alongside the newer-generation model.

This makes a great deal of sense as the current Tiggo 4 Pro is South Africa’s second best-selling SUV at the moment, and most popular Chinese import, hitting a budget-sensitive sweet spot with its starting price of R279,900.

Pricing and specifications for the new ‘Cross’ model will only be confirmed closer to launch, however our source said it would be more expensive than the current Tiggo 4, slotting between that and the Tiggo 7 Pro with a starting price of “under R500,000”.

The new Tiggo 4 Pro for Australia is offered in two variants, Urban and Ultimate, and both are powered by a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine that pushes 108kW and 210Nm.

It has some high-end cabin features in that market, including a 10.25-inch dual infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats and a wire array of driver assistance features.

The current Tiggo 4 Pro was never offered on the Aussie market so it makes sense that the new model would carry that name as there is no naming conflict as there is in SA.

This is the first time that Chery is presenting the new compact SUV to international markets and only a single image has been released thus far. However, Paultan spotted the model in China earlier this year, so head over there to take a closer look at it.
