Miss Bo’s got a thing for music
Boitumelo Moletsane, professionally known as Ms Bo, uses singing, chanting and poetry to express herself.
Johannesburg - Ever since Boitumelo Moletsane was a little girl she has loved music.
“I think it is mainly from my dad who is a big Kwaito, House and R&B fan. As early as five, I would ask family members if they wanted me to dance for them. I wasn’t shy when it came to that. It was always something I wanted to do.”
Moletsane goes by the stage name Miss Bo and she uses singing, chanting and poetry to express herself. Her journey into the music industry didn’t start right away.
“After high school I went to study to appease my parents but I knew that I was a creative. I studied fashion knowing that I could rope it in when I began my music career. I got my two degrees as a back-up plan for my parents.”
Her honours degree in Strategic Brand Communications is something that has proved useful to her as she pursues her music.
“I was strategic in the things I studied because they align with the work I am doing. I want to present myself as a brand in my journey as a creative.
She doesn’t box her music but most of it has an element of soul.
“Whether it is deep house, amapiano, afrosoul, I make music that has a meaning. I give a message in my music. I am also a big feminist and I am all for owning my sexuality. Women are allowed to be sexual beings and feel confident. Some of my music is about different experiences, my love life and relationships that haven’t worked out. I like for people to feel something, that is the common thread in the music.
It needs to be soulful and resonate with a feeling.”
Moletsane had resigned from her job after getting a singing job in Turkey but could not leave the country as the lockdown took over in April last year.
“I became unemployed and had all this time on my hands and I decided to get into studio and make music. I discovered my sound and I managed to put together what I was feeling at the time. Music is such a great outlet for your frustrations and pain. Covid focused my energies back to my passion so it was almost a blessing in the end.”
At the moment, Moletsane is working on putting out an EP for this coming Spring.
“It won’t be a specific sound, it will have a little bit of house, dance, and amapiano. I don't want to be one dimensional in my sound. I am the type of artist who could be making soulful R&B in the next three years. At the core of who I am, I am a soul girl.”
Her breakout single "Wanna Feel You" featuring Heavy K was released in May. She hopes to work with Black Motion to explore more of the ancestral house beats.
The independent artist has also worked with JazziQ but the song is yet to drop.
“There have been different types of artists that I have gotten to work with. My first single Just Feelings came out in 2018, Wena Unamandla I dropped in October. That was my first professionally done song that I got to work with on my own. That was a song I wrote during the lockdown and it speaks about how we go through hardships but at the end of the day we have the power to persevere and get through the challenges life throws at us.”
Miss Bo’s music can be found on YouTube and streaming platforms.
