Johannesburg - The ANC in Johannesburg has called for an investigation into allegations that the mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatse, has abused the services of her bodyguards.
This follows allegations that Phalatse had abused one of her woman minders by making her perform tasks outside of her employment contract.
The bodyguard, whose identity is known to The Star, was allegedly forced to babysit and look after relatives of the mayor.
The Star understands that the mayor had trust issues with the minder and had removed her from her car and wanted nothing to do with her.
The ANC chairperson in Johannesburg, Dada Morero, called for an investigation into these allegations.
“Protectors are human beings, and they have particular duties that they are assigned to, and they should do what is prescribed by the law. This is a serious matter and action has to be taken concerning this matter,” Morero said.
The minder has since been removed from the mayor’s security detail, but The Star has been told that there were no complaints from any of the mayor’s bodyguards by the Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD), under which VIP minders fall.
In a statement, the DA also denied that the mayor had abused her bodyguards. The party’s spokesperson in Johannesburg, Charity McCord, said Phalatse had her own domestic worker and had not forced any of her bodyguards to perform domestic duties.
There were other complaints concerning the treatment of other bodygaurds by various MMCs who serve on Phalatse’s mayoral committee.
