Police in Limpopo have arrested a 61-year-old man for the alleged repeated rape of a 13-year-old girl.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the incidents are believed to have taken place over several days, with the last incident unfolding on May 18.

“The latest incident took place on Sunday, 18 May 2025, at about 13:00,  when concerned community members noticed the young girl entering the suspect's residence and alerted her guardian, who was attending a church service at the time.”

Mashaba said the guardian, after being alerted and returning home, questioned the child and was devastated to learn that the suspect had allegedly raped her multiple times between May 12 and May 16 — with the most recent incident happening on May 18.

The victim was rushed to a nearby medical facility for examination, after which a case of rape was officially opened. Police acted swiftly and managed to trace and arrest the suspect shortly afterwards.

The 61-year-old suspect is set to appear for his first court hearing at the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court on May 20, where he will face rape charges.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the community for their vigilance and swift action in reporting the suspicious behaviour, which helped protect the child and led to the suspect’s arrest.
