A prominent radio personality from Limpopo has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a six-year-old relative.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the alleged incident occurred on May 12 at the girl's home in Mpheni.

Her mother, who was in Pretoria at the time, was alerted by the child's grandmother after noticing the girl was unwell.

"Police reports indicate that the incident allegedly occurred on 12 May at approximately 15.30. The girl's mother, who was in Pretoria at the time, was notified by the child's grandmother that the minor was unwell.

"Upon returning home immediately, she learned that the child had already been taken to the hospital, where medical examination confirmed sexual assault."

Mashaba added that during interviews, the child revealed the suspect had exposed her to inappropriate material before allegedly assaulting her.

The suspect works as a DJ at a radio station based in Thohoyandou.

Mashaba said the 34 year old was arrested on May 19 after an in-depth investigation by Waterval SAPS detectives and appeared in court the following day, May 20.

"He made his initial appearance before the Waterval Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 20 May, where proceedings were postponed to 27 May for a formal bail application," he added.

Meanwhile, Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed deep concern over the incident, calling for justice and greater protection of vulnerable children.

"It is deeply disturbing when those who should be protecting our children become the very perpetrators who harm them. The suspect's position as a public figure and family member makes this case particularly troubling, as it represents a profound betrayal of trust."

She assured the community that SAPS treats crimes against children with utmost seriousness, no matter who the suspect is.
