From casino cashier to academic success with nine distinctions

A passion for numbers and a desire to further her career led Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom cashier Roselynn Sewnath to achieve nine distinctions in her tertiary studies.

The 30-year-old, who enrolled at Regent Business School for online lectures in accounting, has worked at the entertainment complex for three years, where her main responsibility was handling financial transactions. 

“I enjoy learning and saw Sun International’s bursary programme as an opportunity to achieve a degree that would help me advance my career,” said Sewnath.  

"My highest qualification is matric but due to certain personal and financial challenges, I chose to focus on other ways of development. Rather than allowing this to limit me, I actively sought to develop practical skills through work experience, self-study, and hands-on learning. 

"This approach not only helped me grow but also taught me resilience, adaptability, and the value of lifelong learning. These experiences have shaped me into a determined and resourceful person, and I believe they’ve equipped me with the right mindset and skills to succeed in any role I take on." 

On her multitude of distinctions in her first year, Sewnath said discipline was key to her success and that she had made it a priority to study for two hours each day. 

“Receiving my results was unforgettable. I could not believe what I had achieved. My biggest challenge was balancing full-time work and studies, while being a mom to my one-year-old daughter. It required determination, time management, and a strong support system from my husband, family, and friends." 

The dedicated student woke early to study, finding that the quiet mornings were the best time to absorb information.

By alleviating the financial burden of tuition fees and textbooks, the Sun International bursary allowed her to focus on her results. 

“I hope that once I’ve completed my undergraduate degree, I’ll have the opportunity to continue advancing my career within Sun International while pursuing an honours degree.”

“If I had to give advice to other parents who are studying part-time, it would be to stay focused and remember why you’re doing it, especially if it’s for your children,” she said. 

“Achieving nine distinctions has boosted my confidence and assured me that I’m on the right career path.”

Sibaya’s General Manager, Virath Gobrie, congratulated Sewnath on her academic success.
