Rain check: Kruger National Park urges visitors to stay safe after flooding

Visitors planning a trip to the iconic Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga have been urged to meticulously plan their routes and travel with extreme caution.

In a recent alert shared to Facebook, South African National Parks (SANParks) drew attention to the current inaccessibility of the Balule low water bridge, which has been rendered unusable due to flooding from the recent heavy rains in the area.

Compounding the problem, a vehicle became stuck while attempting to navigate the swollen crossing, prompting concerns for the safety of all travellers.

In their statement, SANParks emphasised the importance of adhering to safety guidelines:

“We urge all guests to please refrain from attempting to cross any low water bridges that are either closed by a visible barricade or where the water levels appear particularly high.”

This precautionary advice is aimed at ensuring the safety of visitors in light of the current adverse conditions.

The Balule low water bridge is a popular passage for those hoping to explore the park's rich wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.

Situated more or less in the centre of the park, just south of Olifants Camp, Balule lies close to the mighty Olifants River.

This unfortunate circumstance serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the need for vigilance when travelling in areas prone to sudden weather changes.

SANParks has committed to providing timely updates regarding the situation, assuring the public that they will inform visitors as soon as the water subsides and the stuck vehicle has been removed, allowing for the safe reopening of the road.
