The community police forums of Mitchells Plain and Nyanga are looking forward to working with the newly appointed station commanders in their respective police stations.
This comes after SAPS Western Cape’s acting provincial commissioner Major General Albert Maqhashalala, announced the appointment of four senior managers in vacant positions on Wednesday.
The newly appointed senior officers were promoted to the level of Brigadier effective from October 1 in different positions around the province.
And Brigadier Jan Alexander was appointed station commander of Nyanga police station to take over the reins from Major General Vuyisile Ncata, who was promoted to district commissioner in Nelson Mandela Bay back in June.
Brigadier Lindiwe Dyantyi was appointed as station commander of the Mitchells Plain police station. Dyantyi replaces Cass Goolam, who retired at the end of September.
Mitchells Plain CPF chairperson Norman Jantjies said even though he was not familiar with the new commander, he was looking forward to engaging with her on the issue of gang in the area.
“We welcome the new station commander. We are hoping that she will be able to tackle the issue of gangsterism that is all (plaguing) our area. We are looking forward to engaging her, and we also hope that she will embrace the community and work with us like the previous commissioners,” he said.
Nyanga CPF’s acting chairperson Michael Bangani called on the new commander to work with the community to fight hijackings, gender-based violence (GBV), and other violent crimes.
Bangani said they were disappointed that the management of the station did not inform the CPF and community leaders about the new appointment and said they were yet to meet him.
“We were not informed about this appointment. We heard it from a source, but he (station commander) was not officially introduced to us. As long as he works with the community to solve the issues of hijackings, GBV and the murder rates,” he said.
Other appointments included Brigadier Rozelle Bekker, who was appointed as section head: legal support and Brigadier Leon Hanana as provincial head for serious and violent Crime.
