THE daughter of a Delft crime activist was among two people shot and killed in separate incidents in Delft on Wednesday.
Police were called to the two crime scenes that occurred within 90 minutes of each other on Wednesday night.
SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said officers responded to the first scene shortly after 8pm in Voorbrug.
“Upon arrival in Hartenberg Street at around 8.05pm, they found the body of a 32-year-old female who sustained gunshot wounds to her body,” he said.
Swartbooi said shortly after this, Delft police attended to another complaint in the area.
“At the scene in Mendoza Street, in Voorbrug, they found the body of a 24-year-old man, lying in front of the house, who sustained gunshot wounds.
Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel, with police yet to make arrests or establish a motive for the killings.
However, Voorbrug Neighbourhood Watch’s spokesperson, Susan Jantjies, said the female victim was caught in an alleged gang rivalry.
Jantjies said the 32-year-old was the daughter of a local crime activist, which heightened fears of being targeted among other activists.
Last week, 37-year-old Lazelle Collins was shot and killed during a suspect gang feud while walking to church.
“We are so fed up. The government makes plans for us, and we are not consulted on anything. We might be the next target because the person who shot her is well known to the community because he stays around,” said Jantjies.
Crime activist, Farida Ryklief, said: “As a community, we are broken. We dedicate our time to ensure the safety of our community, not thinking that it would hit us.”
“We are mourning the death of a young lady that was known to us and whose mother is an active Neighbourhood Watch member for many years now.”
