Police are hunting for three suspects following a Facebook Marketplace scam that saw a 17-year-old suspect arrested on Thursday afternoon for allegedly robbing an unsuspecting man.
Nyanga police were on patrol in the area when they were approached by the victim, who reported the incident.
“In yet another case where a Marketplace advertiser was lured to Browns Farm under the pretext of delivering advertised goods, he was robbed by four suspects (on Thursday) afternoon,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg
“As part of the police investigation, one of the suspects, a 17- year-old female, was spotted and arrested by the police. The search continues for the remaining suspects,”.“
The teenager is expected to appear before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
There have been many similar incidents in Nyanga in which advertisers are lured to Browns Farm, robbed and attacked.
Last week, six high school pupils who had been luring unsuspecting Facebook Marketplace sellers were arrested by the police in Nyanga.
This followed the murder of 51-year-old Ben Tuzee, who was stabbed to death after he and his niece were lured to Browns Farm under the pretence that their TV set, advertised on Facebook Marketplace, had a potential buyer.
Police arrested three suspects aged 23, 18 and 16 in that incident.
Twigg has appealed to social media users and advertisers to remain vigilant when transacting on various platforms.
Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
